Epitalon

Epitalon (Epithalon / Epithalone)

Overview

Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide based on the natural peptide epithalamin, which is produced by the pineal gland. Developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, Epitalon has been the subject of extensive preclinical research examining its effects on telomerase activity and cellular aging mechanisms.

Research Summary

Preclinical studies on Epitalon have examined its effects on telomerase activity in cell cultures and animal models. Research by Khavinson and colleagues documented increased telomerase activity in human somatic cells treated with Epitalon (Khavinson et al., 2003). Animal studies in rodent models have investigated effects on pineal gland function, melatonin synthesis, and lifespan parameters. In vitro studies have examined its effects on gene expression patterns associated with cellular senescence and DNA repair mechanisms.

Proposed Mechanism of Action

Epitalon is proposed to activate telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), the catalytic subunit of telomerase, thereby promoting telomere elongation in somatic cells. Additional research suggests it may modulate pineal gland peptide secretion and melatonin synthesis, potentially influencing circadian rhythm regulation and antioxidant defense systems.
