Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with an added Pro-Gly-Pro sequence for enhanced stability. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Selank has been the subject of extensive preclinical research examining its interaction with GABAergic, serotonergic, and immune signaling systems.

Research Summary

Preclinical research on Selank has examined its effects on neurotransmitter metabolism, gene expression in the CNS, and immune system modulation. Studies in rodent models have investigated its interaction with GABA receptor systems and serotonin metabolism (Seredenin et al., 2002). Gene expression studies have documented its effects on BDNF and NGF expression in hippocampal tissue. Immunological research has examined its influence on IL-6, T-helper cell balance, and immunoglobulin expression. Selank is registered as a pharmaceutical agent in Russia, but has not undergone FDA review.

Proposed Mechanism of Action

Research indicates Selank modulates the balance of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitter systems, particularly GABAergic tone. It has been shown to influence the expression of neurotrophic factors (BDNF, NGF) and modulate enkephalin metabolism.
